July 1998 Meeting On The Summer '98 Migration Of Computers - Goals

  Attendance

John McClain, Jim Smith, Qian Wang, Aaron DuMar

  Agenda

Discuss goals and interdependencies. (John)

  Notes

The dates for the goals were reviewed and updated. Also discussed were the various options for handling mail and http services during the transition. A mail forwarder will be installed to intercept mail into chaos and silly. This system can be easily extended to forward for the VAXen should they meet an untimely demise. Mail will be forwarded back to physics.tamu.edu, which will use the name server to forward mail to individual accounts. It is imperative that individuals set their mail forwarding within the nameserver, from the web, so that they will not experience any interruption of services.

Chaos will have interractive logins disabled sometime after a sufficient transition period is allowed. A new machine, currently named scanner, will be turned into the people and faculty web server and chaos will redirect to it. Files on scanner will be mounted at user's public_html directories.

Wonryull will begin going through the current personal pages on chaos to make sure that relative links are used as much as possible. This will help ensure a smooth transition.
