The TAMU Physics Research Program
Physics - The Fundamental Physical Science: Ultimately, all processes in our Universe are governed by the laws of Physics. Physics offers an incredible variety of challenges and opportunities to explore the richness of nature. Whatever your interests, our department has a broad range of offerings.
Physics - The Applied Science: Most advances in the past century were only possible due to ground breaking work in Physics. Typical examples are the transistor and the integrated circuit. Other examples include the vast improvements in imaging technology in medicine and of course the laser, which has produced a huge impact on our everyday life - from CD technology to eye surgery.
Physics - Our Department: The Department of Physics at Texas A&M University offers a wide range of research programs in both theoretical and experimental physics, many of which are frontier topics. The Center for Theoretical Physics fosters the growth of existing programs and the development of new areas of research such as superstring and super gravity theory. Research areas include elementary particle, nuclear, atomic, quantum optical, condensed matter, and many body. The experimental program involves active research in accelerator, atomic and molecular, quantum optical, low-temperature and condensed-matter, nuclear and intermediate energy, and high-energy phyics. Experimental nuclear physics is conducted at the Cyclotron Institute. Special areas of applied physics also are offered.
Well-equipped machine, electronics, cryogenics, and student shops (housed in custom designed laboratories) are maintained to support the active atomic/molecular, condensed matter/materials science/low-temperature, accelerator design/high-energy, and nuclear physics research programs.
Physics - In The 21st Century: The next century promises to be just as exciting and full of surprises. We invite you to explore with us the fun, fascination and excitement that Physics has to offer. Please take a moment to browse through this research brochure. For further information, you may wish to consult the rest of our site, in particular the graduate information section. For other questions or application materials, write to us at: Physics Department, Texas A&M University, College Station, TX 77843, or phone the department at (979) 845-7717. You are strongly encouraged to talk with us further about our graduate programs and to come and visit us if you can. If you are interested in a particular subfield, the faculty in that area would be happy to talk with you about their research programs and the opportunities for graduate study in their research groups.
