Welcome to the Department of Physics at TAMU
The Graduate Admissions Committee should like to take this opportunity to introduce you to the very exciting and dynamic Department of Physics at Texas A&M University. Our department is conducting cutting-edge research in astronomy, atomic, quantum optics, condensed matter, nuclear (in association with the Cyclotron Institute), and high energy physics. In addition, we have recently implemented a new applied physics program to handle the more interdisciplinary oriented students. Many of our faculty have collaborative programs with the College of Engineering as well as the Medical School.
There are currently nearly 70 faculty members and we plan to hire several more in the next five years. Our highly talented faculty has one National Academy of Sciences member and six Distinguished Professors. There are presently nine endowed Chairs in the department and plans are underway to obtain more. The faculty have obtained many awards including ten medals from learned societies, five fellowships (Guggenheim, Sloan and von Humboldt), and two Young Investigator Awards. Many of the faculty are also Fellows of professional societies in physics.
The department presently has over 160 graduate students with a wide range of ethnic backgrounds. They are the sine qua non for the outstanding research being conducted in our department. We also have 140 undergraduate students and most of our seniors participate in an undergraduate research progject. Many of our seniors have graduated summa cum laude, magna cum laude and cum laude and most go on to prestigious graduate schools.
We feel certain that you will find this department a very exciting and challenging place to pursue your graduate education. If you would like to know more, please be sure to visit our graduate information section.
Sincerely,
The Graduate Admissions Committee
